Process Based Improvement
Cabot is a global speciality chemicals and performance materials company headquartered in Boston, MA. The Company’s major products are carbon black, fumed silica, inkjet colorants, capacitor materials, and cesium formate drilling fluids. Cabot Specialty Fluids was established in 1996 to make cesium formate brine and powder products readily available to the oil industry. OLC (Europe) Ltd worked with the Aberdeen head quarters operation to develop improved process controls through training staff in total quality management, quality control and quality improvement techniques on the way to establishing ISO 9001: 2000 certification of systems.
Dr Chris Bamber and Dr James Boyes of OLC acting as trainers and quality consultants to CABOT worked with senior staff in Aberdeen to develop process mapping, control and improvements 2004/2005.

To deliver training to the staff at Aberdeen Headquarters so that they can maintain and service their ISO 9001 certification. Develop competent auditors and quality professionals that are aware of total quality management, quality control and quality improvement techniques.
Central to any business excellence regime is the control of processes both technical and transactional. This is why the corporate training delivered to CABOT employees focused on process mapping, control and improvement techniques as advocated by the international standard for quality management, ISO 9001.
The programme of training included internal audit training based on the principles outlined in ISO 19011 and provided staff with an overall view of business excellence models and business improvement techniques.
Staff developed competence in internal auditing, process mapping and procedure writing skills. Over a two year period Dr James Boyes and Dr Chris Bamber of OLC facilitated improvements to management systems at CABOT and staff know maintain successfully maintain their ISO 9001 system, with particular emphasis on the management of quality audits, management reviews, customer feedback analysis and business improvement programmes.
The corporate training and facilitation process with OLC identified key areas of process improvement for CABOT which led to continued certification to ISO 9001 and other international standards. CABOT continue to hold an enviable position within the oil and gas industry as leaders in the field of speciality drilling fluid provision.
