AG Glass Limited is a manufacturing company specialising in the design, manufacture and distribution of hermetically sealed glass units for commercial, industrial and domestic use.

Challenge

The challenge for AG Glass was to rebuild their old ISO 9001: 1994 quality management system into a new business system compliant with the new ISO 9001: 2000 standard.

Solution

Over a four-month period a quality team worked together under the supervision of OLC to address this company-wide challenge. The focus was on working as a team and on maximum involvement in ISO 9001: 2000 system development from everybody at AG Glass – from sales to dispatch, from managing director to shop floor operators.

Key Interventions

  • Completion of a GAP analysis tool, comparing the requirements of ISO 9001:2000 to current practice in order to identify areas that required development and improvement
  • Project planning using simple practical tools like the OLC Mission-Objectives-Task board
  • Process mapping of business-wide activities and facilitation for documenting methods of work flow to deliver manufacturing improvements
  • Ensuring involvement and buy-in from all departments through interviews and process map reviews with all departmental managers and supervisors
  • Communication exercises: OLC facilitated the presentation of the new system to the owners, senior directors, managers and work force to communicate the new operational improvements for AG Glass

Soreen Ltd produces an extensive range of food and snack products for sale within consumer markets.  They supply their products to all major retailers and supermarkets within the UK and have worked hard to develop a strong reputation for product choice and quality

Challenge

To develop a process based management system compliant to ISO 9000:2000 and facilitate Soreen’s accreditation to the standard.

Solution

OLC (Europe) Ltd adopted a ‘top down’ approach to the development of a management system by first identifying and analysing Soreen’s key business processes.  This analysis was subsequently used to guide Soreen’s sub-process identification activities.  With all business processes identified, OLC consultants then helped Soreen to integrate their existing procedures and work-instructions within the revised management system, and to develop and deploy the Information Systems needed to distribute the system throughout the entire plant.

CABOT Speciality Fluids

Process Based Improvement

Cabot is a global speciality chemicals and performance materials company headquartered in Boston, MA. The Company’s major products are carbon black, fumed silica, inkjet colorants, capacitor materials, and cesium formate drilling fluids. Cabot Specialty Fluids was established in 1996 to make cesium formate brine and powder products readily available to the oil industry. OLC (Europe) Ltd worked with the Aberdeen head quarters operation to develop improved process controls through training staff in total quality management, quality control and quality improvement techniques on the way to establishing ISO 9001: 2000 certification of systems.

The Vision

To deliver training to the staff at Aberdeen Headquarters so that they can maintain and service their ISO 9001 certification. Develop competent auditors and quality professionals that are aware of total quality management, quality control and quality improvement techniques.

The Process

Central to any business excellence regime is the control of processes both technical and transactional. This is why the corporate training delivered to CABOT employees focused on process mapping, control and improvement techniques as advocated by the international standard for quality management, ISO 9001.

The programme of training included internal audit training based on the principles outlined in ISO 19011 and provided staff with an overall view of business excellence models and business improvement techniques.

Staff developed competence in internal auditing, process mapping and procedure writing skills. Over a two year period Dr James Boyes and Dr Chris Bamber of OLC facilitated improvements to management systems at CABOT and staff know maintain successfully maintain their ISO 9001 system, with particular emphasis on the management of quality audits, management reviews, customer feedback analysis and business improvement programmes.

The Benefits

The corporate training and facilitation process with OLC identified key areas of process improvement for CABOT which led to continued certification to ISO 9001 and other international standards. CABOT continue to hold an enviable position within the oil and gas industry as leaders in the field of speciality drilling fluid provision.

Established over 40 years ago, QPSL is a leading manufacturer of specialist building products under the Quantum, Dacatie, Qwood and Q Lean Supply brand names. All those brands combine a strong manufacturing heritage with the latest lean production principles in order to create value as our customers see it. Quantum have recently engaged in system improvement activities and gained certification to ISO 14001, the environmental management systems standard, which now compliments their ISO 9001: 2008 quality systems certification with SGS. The introduction of lean manufacturing has led to one piece flow giving improved productivity and significant increases in profitability.

The Process

Avans University

Business English & British Cultural Studies

Avans began in 1812, situated in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, and remains to this day one of the Netherlands’ top universities and leaders in modern and professional education delivery. The university is located across three cities now and is modern and sleek thanks to countless efforts to keep it ahead of the competition; with a prime look, its course delivery matches its professionalism. Now, in order to centralise their students with the language of business, Avans set up yearly visits to OLC Europe at our Manchester campus to take advantage of our business expertise for up to one week at a time. The Dutch students have had access for the last two years to our facilities and our professional lecturers including those with PhDs, Masters and professorial experience as well as Manchester’s famous city and its day and night life.

Avans is a university located in Tilburg, Breda and ‘s-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands; it provides modern and professional Higher Education courses, primarily in Business based subjects.

The Vision

To maintain current relationships with Avans and continue to deliver a myriad of courses to Avans’ staff and students; ensure the use of the city of Manchester is continued, with particular attention to the continuation and augmentation of field research in a way that is both interesting and educational; to build on the current relationship in order to offer Avans’ students further opportunities, to learn and research British business practice and expertise.

The Process

We offer up to two week courses for Avans’ business students. The students have the opportunity to visit the vibrant city centre of Manchester. The Express Networks building is situated close to Piccadilly Gardens, which makes B2B research in the UK extraordinarily convenient. The courses themselves have tended to vary from two day courses in Business English and British Culture or a weeklong Inspirational Visit for Avans’ tutors, to a weeklong course in Strategic Marketing & Business Development.

It is our conscious decision to make sure that the assessment of their learning is made through presentations which remain exciting, fun and deeply engaging. We have had numbers up to nearly 200 in the past which the Express Networks building can easily accommodate and we are keen to keep this tradition going for the benefit of their students and our pleasure in teaching them.

The Vision

To develop a system fully compliant with ISO 27001 and ensure that all operational activities at Barry Bennett Ltd are compliant to that standard and that information systems security is not compromised. An important facet of that requirement was to ensure that internal auditors were trained and that certification was achieved in record time.
