Established over 40 years ago, QPSL is a leading manufacturer of specialist building products under the Quantum, Dacatie, Qwood and Q Lean Supply brand names. All those brands combine a strong manufacturing heritage with the latest lean production principles in order to create value as our customers see it. Quantum have recently engaged in system improvement activities and gained certification to ISO 14001, the environmental management systems standard, which now compliments their ISO 9001: 2008 quality systems certification with SGS. The introduction of lean manufacturing has led to one piece flow giving improved productivity and significant increases in profitability.

QPSL is nationally recognised as the UK leader in stair nosing building products and is the largest supplier of stair nosing products in the UK.

The Vision

To deliver a program of continuous improvement, including training to the staff, at the Oldham Headquarters so that they can maintain and service their ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 certification. Develop competent integrated systems thinking, process mapping and quality professionals that are aware of total quality management, quality control and quality improvement techniques resulting in an integrated business system model that will combine current management systems, software packages and world class practices.

The Process

Central to any business excellence regime is the control of systems and processes both technical and transactional. This is why the consulting package delivered to QPSL focused on integrating through system modelling and process mapping, control and improvement techniques as advocated by the international standards for management, ISO 9001; ISO 14001; ISO 27001; ISO 50001 and others.

Complementing the consulting work, the program of training included internal audit training based on the principles outlined in ISO 19011 and provided staff with an overall view of business excellence models and business improvement techniques.

Staff developed competence in managing the business through KPI dashboards, internal auditing, process mapping and procedure writing skills.

The Vision

To develop a system fully compliant with ISO 27001 and ensure that all operational activities at Barry Bennett Ltd are compliant to that standard and that information systems security is not compromised. An important facet of that requirement was to ensure that internal auditors were trained and that certification was achieved in record time. Implementing ISO 27001 through OLC consulting was a four stage process with 16 manageable parts; the benefits of which ensured that information security was embedded in all operational activities of the business:

STAG Geological Services

ISO 9001: 2008 Quality Management Case Study Systems

STAG is recognised as a leading provider of practical solutions to

its expanding customer base of major multinationals & emerging independents worldwide.

STAG Geological Services Limited formed in 1995 with a small, select group of wellsite and operations geologists. Client companies appreciated the straightforward approach of Stag, and the competence of the personnel offered. Stag grew with the development of a training arm and the establishment of two lecture rooms as comfortable venues in newly built offices.

Dr Chris Bamber of OLC acting as quality consultant to STAG helped implement new quality practices and appointed third party assessors DNV to certify the newly developed quality management systems.

Profile

Building a quality system certified by DNV would be immediately recognised in the industry as a commitment to quality provision of geological services.

The Vision

To position STAG as a quality assured provider of geological services to the worldwide oil and gas industry.

The Process

OLC carried out an initial audit and gap analysis of the STAG Geological Services Ltd operational activities in Aldermaston, UK. This led the way for a process of developing a quality management system that satisfied ISO 9001: 2008 requirements. Firstly, the key process of STAG were identified and documented within a business system model which became the central tenet of their quality management manual.

OLC trained James Tidey in the skills of quality auditing and continuous improvement which in turn led to improvement of operations. After a period of systems development and consultation with OLC, the STAG quality management system was ready for third party assessment. The most appropriate of the certifying bodies for the industry STAG operated was considered as DNV. It was in January 2011 that the initial assessment was carried out and the certification visit was conducted in March of that year, leading to certification of STAG quality management system to ISO 9001: 2008 later that month.

The Benefits

The consulting process with OLC identified key areas of improvement for the business which led to certification, with DNV, of the STAG Geological Services Ltd quality management system within one year of the project start. STAG have confirmed their position within the oil and gas industry as leaders in the field of Geological Service provision.
