Established over 40 years ago, QPSL is a leading manufacturer of specialist building products under the Quantum, Dacatie, Qwood and Q Lean Supply brand names. All those brands combine a strong manufacturing heritage with the latest lean production principles in order to create value as our customers see it. Quantum have recently engaged in system improvement activities and gained certification to ISO 14001, the environmental management systems standard, which now compliments their ISO 9001: 2008 quality systems certification with SGS. The introduction of lean manufacturing has led to one piece flow giving improved productivity and significant increases in profitability.

Profile

QPSL is nationally recognised as the UK leader in stair nosing building products and is the largest supplier of stair nosing products in the UK.

The Vision

To deliver a program of continuous improvement, including training to the staff, at the Oldham Headquarters so that they can maintain and service their ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 certification. Develop competent integrated systems thinking, process mapping and quality professionals that are aware of total quality management, quality control and quality improvement techniques resulting in an integrated business system model that will combine current management systems, software packages and world class practices.

The Process

Central to any business excellence regime is the control of systems and processes both technical and transactional. This is why the consulting package delivered to QPSL focused on integrating through system modelling and process mapping, control and improvement techniques as advocated by the international standards for management, ISO 9001; ISO 14001; ISO 27001; ISO 50001 and others.

Complementing the consulting work, the program of training included internal audit training based on the principles outlined in ISO 19011 and provided staff with an overall view of business excellence models and business improvement techniques.

Staff developed competence in managing the business through KPI dashboards, internal auditing, process mapping and procedure writing skills.

The Vision

To develop a system fully compliant with ISO 27001 and ensure that all operational activities at Barry Bennett Ltd are compliant to that standard and that information systems security is not compromised. An important facet of that requirement was to ensure that internal auditors were trained and that certification was achieved in record time. Implementing ISO 27001 through OLC consulting was a four stage process with 16 manageable parts; the benefits of which ensured that information security was embedded in all operational activities of the business:

The Process

Stage One: Start Up

  1. Purchase a copy of the standard
  2. Obtain management support
  3. Determine the scope of the ISMS
  4. Identify applicable legislation

Stage Two: Risk Assessments

  1. Define a method of risk assessment
  2. Create an inventory of information assets to protect
  3. Identify risks
  4. Assess the risks

Stage Three: Control Procedures

  1. Identify applicable objectives and controls
  2. Set up policy and procedures to control risks
  3. Allocate resources and train the staff
  4. Monitor the implementation of the ISMS

Stage Four: Certification Process

  1. Prepare for certification
  2. Preliminary visit (gap analysis)
  3. Initial certification visit
  4. On-going assessments

Profile

This human resource and people skill development programme of work was aimed at supporting all employees toward a shared purpose of building a High Performing Organisation.

The Vision

To position Vestas Blades UK as a Best–in-Class manufacturer on the Isle of White, through providing an organisational needs analysis and delivering training, education and skills development activities.

The Process

Through partnerships with EEF NW, The University of Salford and OLC delivered to employees of Vestas Blades an unrivalled training and development programme. This programme delivered to the entire company on the Isle of Wight an awareness of the need for Organisational Excellence and High Performance Organisation best practice. In particular, OLC trained up to 26 employees to University Diploma level with Salford University and to Professional Diploma level with the EEFNW and through OLC City and Guilds Centre Status the Business Improvement Techniques programme up to level 4 to all technical staff personnel.

Professor John Sharp lead the team of trainers and lecturers to deliver a co-ordinated set of modules and awareness sessions for employees of Vestas.
